Ministers give but a gloomy account of the finances. There will be a very large deficit, and it will probably be necessary to borrow £100,000 to £150,000 to meet liabilities ; extra taxation will be imperatively necessary. Bespecting the overland telegraph to Port Darwin, Ministers, instead of a line via Port Augusta, will propose one via Wentworth as generally more convenient, and they will ask Victoria and New South Wales to share the cost of its construction. Ministers will shortly ask for an adjournment to enable them to send representatives to the Intercolonial Conference, and to prepare important measures. June 1.
