(fbom our owjt coEEESFOJTDEffT.) Dtthedin, May 13th. Mr Fox addressed the citizens at Christchurch last evening, when there ■were 700 people present. He said he wa s the oldest Canterbury mtn in the province. Twenty-oneyears ago, with Capt. Thomas, he had surveyed the settlement, and mi looking back at the part he had taken in the settlement of Canterbury and Otago,j he felt it to be the proudest ; moment of his life. After expressing his admiration' at the manner in which his Southern fellow-colonists had. borne the burdens of the North, he proceeded to give a Bketclj of Native affairs for the past two yearsj as also a summary of the expenditure of the present Ministry. He then replied to some assertions made by the .Wettings ton correspondent of the Otago , Baity Times, who had charged him (Mr Fox) with having received a telegram altering the figures he had laid before the Otagp meeting, but which he had suppressedj That, said Mr Fox, was altogether untruej and he could not help expressing his indignation at an attempt to fasten upon him such an odious falsehood. He also uttered his astonishment at the Daily Times inserting the contributions of a gentleman who purloined the secrets of the Ministry from the private despatch box> He would ask whether it was right or hon? orable that any section of the press should employ such -a double-dyed scoundrel. It was his intention, he went on to say, to ask the Assembly for power to r tise a loan for the purpose of road-making in the North. — -Mr .GUHesJias resigned. On dit that Mr Bfiintoii, C.E., haa offered to go home to negociate the Clutha Railway. The Financial Statement is accepted as satisfactory ; the actual deficit is : £24,000. G-overnment intends to bring down a resolution asking power to borrow £600,000 for the construction of railways, reservoirs on the goldfields, and other public works. The General Government intend to recommend the loan. May 16. Mr Collie met the Chamber of Commerce to-day, when resolutions were carried that Government should support the mail service via San Francisco, on condition that the port of call should not be further north than Wellington, or further south" than the Bluff. A motion has been tabled in the Council affirming the desirability of union, with Canterbury. " : - It has been proposed to form a company for the purchase of the s.s. Taranaki. , Favorable accounts are to hand relative to the dredging of the Shotover. - The average weekly yield is 32ozs. The Customs revenue for the colony for the March quarter shows an increase of £10,000. •We take the following telegraphic summary from the Otago Daily Times : — Napieb, May Bth. __ Mr Witty's party haye 1 returned Jto Mohaka, having scoured -all the country between that place and Lake Waikaremoana. They followed up_ for two_ days the traces of some natives, who at last escaped by crossing the lake, in a canoe. Mr Hamlin's force came across the* tracks of the enemy near Ohiwa, 20 mflea on the Wairoa side of the Waikaremoana Lake. They followed up th&~ene.my and shot four of them, besides capturing & rifle, a double-barrelled gun, some ammunition, and 300 capsr They also destroyett" several canoes and some plantations. There were no casualties on our pide/ The force composing the expedition is not on pay. —.., a-.
