Sydney, April 29. At West Maitland the rain commenced again on Thursday. The backwater is rising fast. Two. miles of the railway have been washed away. Two more lives have been lost in the Hunter district. At Windsor the water rose twenty feet during the night, and is rising at the rate of a foot an hour. Great alarm is felt for the safety of the settlers. The boats sent down rescued a number of settlers who had taken refuge on the house tops. The floods have also been experienced ' at Penrith, Dubbo, and Wagga Wagga. ' At Yass, the new bridge, seven thousand bushels of wheat, and Barber's mill have been washed away. A family of four have been drowned at Shoalhaven. Terrible gales have prevailed along the coast with a heavy sea. The schooner Alcandre, which put in for shelter, lost her canvas, boat, main boom, and bulwarks. The schooner Notion has foundered at Broken Bay. The ketch Dauntless has been wrecked at Port Hawking; one man drowned. The brig Spec is a total wreck at Bulli ; crew saved. Portions of two wrecks have been washed ashore at Woolongong. The schooner Hannah has been wrecked ; at Ulladulla ; all hands saved. The ship Walter Hood, from London to Sydney, was wrecked between Jervis' Bay and Elladulla on Tuesday last. The Government steamer Thetis went out today and rescued the captain and thirteen others who were clinging to the wreck. One passenger was drowned, and two men died of exhaustion. The ship is
a breaking up. The cargo is insured in q Sydney offices for £27,000. May 2. 9 The Kate Kearney, from Western 0 Australia, has been placed in quarantine i, with 15 cases of small-pox on board. 1 Three deaths occurred on the passage j amongst her crew. The Henriette brings the intelligence i, that the Bishop of Mauritius had died at j Port Louis. s The floods have destroyed the WoolF garlo silver and lead mine near Yaas, j formerly purchased by Mr Throckmorton. It is reported that several live 3 have j been lost at Gundagai, where there was j such destruction of life during the floods j \in 1852. Three persons have been ' drowned at Dubbo. [ May 3. i A large portion of the "Walter Hood's cargo has been washed ashore. Five i bodies have been recovered at Shoalhaven. The wreck of the vessel ! was sold by auction to-day, and realised £95. i A telegram from Wagga Wagga reports that the flood in that township and suri rounding district has done an immense f amount of damage. • The bushranger Thunderbolt has re;sumed his depredations in the Northern i districts. , May 4. The name of the person who committed suicide in the Domain proves to be Chan- , nan. He was a mining engineer. . ■ The flood along the valley of the i Murrumbidgee is still spreading, and proving very destructive to property; \ The schooner Stormbird, from Newcastle, is missing, and portions of a vessel, supposed to be the Stormbird, having been seen off the heads, the worst is feared as to the fate of the missing vessel. # The Legislative Council last night reduced the Loan Bill by £322,709. The ketch Amity is missing. It is supposed she foundered during the recent heavy weather. Great distress exists everywhere in consequence of the floods. - May 5. There has been a warm debate in the Legislative Council on the Deficiency Loans Bill, and it looks extremely likely to be rejected. The Government intend to immediately appoint a gold-fields commission. The wool sales were quiet. Late rates still rule. — Extensive landslips at Maitland still continue. The remainder of the survivors have arrived from the Walter Hood's wreck. May 6. A new rush has taken place near Mudgee, and is turning out extremely well as far as the prospects at present appear. There are 500 miners already on the ground. The Government embankment at Maitland is still sinking gradually, having been completely soaked by the floods. The bishop of Bathurst was installed i yesterday by. the metropolitan. An 1 inaugural soiree to celebrate the event takes place at Bathurst this evening. Quarantine is imposed lon_vessel_s_ from the north- west coast. The crew of the Kate Kearney is still suffering from smallpox. The ketch Nuraba has been wrecked in Bateman's Bay, but the crew were saved. "May 7. His Excellency the Governor came down to-day to the Council Chamber, and prorogued Parliament with the usual formalities, to Tuesday, the 14th day of June next. The conduct of the Ministry in closing the session without having taken further action on the Loan Bill after it was altered in the Upper House, provokes a good deal of unfavorable comment. Topley won the walking match with Baker, who gave up in the last round. A Wagga Wagga telegram reports that the Murrumbidgee floods are carrying • destruction along the river banks. The Stirlingshire, from Glasgow, re- , ports having encountered very heavy weather, during which she lost her boats and damaged her cargo.
