We take the following telegraphic summary from the Otago Daily Times: — Wellington, May sth. r rhe inquest on the fire in Cuba street commenced to-day, but was adjourned till Wednesday next. Light's house was insured in the Northern. Company for £200, and in the New Zealand. Company for £100, but both policies are supposed to be vitiated, owing to neither Company having been informed of the existence of the other policy. Sergeant Carkeek has been recommended by Mr Branigan for the New Zealand Cross, for bravery in going on foot from Eotorua to Tapapa the day after Te Kooti had passed that way, to convey information to Colonel M'Donnell, when all the Maoris refused to undertake the service. Napiee, May 6th. The scouting party to Lake Waikaremoana under the command of Mr Witty, have returned. They killed one man, and took one woman prisoner. Mr Hamlin has not yet been heard from. The Luna arrived at Auckland on the 2nd, from Hokianga, with the Governor and Mr M'Lean on board. Nelson, May 6th. Auckland news to hand abates that the Wonga Wonga had not yet arrived, but was hourly expected. The City of Melbourne brought 122 passengers, en route for San Francisco, She was to leave Auckland on the 4th. The G-overnor and Mr M'Lean had a satisfactory korero with the Native chiefs at Whangaroa. The natives are anxious, that a town should be established there. Cheistchuech, May 6th. Messrs Wynn Williams, Sawtell, and Hawkes, have been elected to represent Christchurch in the Provincial Council.
