"We take the following telegraphic sumi mary from the Otago Daily Times ; — "WELLnrQTOir, April 28th. j The B.s. Taranaki was taken to the ] hulk to coal to-day. She will make a trial trip on Saturday, the 7th prox., and will go South under the command of Captain Holmes of the Wellington, while that vessel is undergoing repairs. The Marine authorities refuse to grant the Taranaki a certificate to carry passengers, until her bottom has been inspected in dock. Bishop Abraham, of Wellington, has accepted the office of Chaplain and Coadjutor to the Bishop of Lichfield, and consequently will not return to the colony. At the meeting regarding the formation of the new steam company to-day, the Provisional Directors resigned, owing to the want of support on the part of the public. The scheme will probably be abandoned. Napieb, April 28th. Intelligence was received last evening that ten men belonging to Hapurbna's hapu of the TJriwera tribe came out of the bush and surrendered to Captain Mair. They state that Hapurona and his hapu, to the number of 40, are desirous of giving themselves up. It is believed that their surrender will be accepted. This hapu Has been hiding near Ahikereru. The men who themselves also state that Te Kooti with only 20 men is at the Waiqeka (Jorge, near Opotiki, and that he is firing on fern root and honey. ■■*.. . m April 29th. The s.s. Airedale arrived from Auckland at 12 o'clock. She passed the Star of the South at the Hole in the Wall at midnight on the 27th, and stopped for an hour at White Island to land Dr Hector. It is rumoured that Colonel Haultain will resign hia seat for Franklin, in the House of Eepresentatives, and that^ Mr Mackay will offer himself as a candidate for it. The half-yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand was held at Auckland on the 27th. Mr Thomas Russell was in the chair, and there was a moderate attendance of shareholders. The Chair, nian stated 1 that a special meeting would be called to propose the extension of the capital of the Bank by £100,000, for the purpose of enabling the directors to maintain the business of the Bank despite the competition which had to be encountered throughout the colony. Mr James O'Neill and others approved of the suggestion, but thought that a larger extension of capital might be proposed. The report states that the amount I available for division among the shareholders is £45,513 8s lid, which will be appropriated as follows: — A dividend of 10 per cent, absorbing £25,000 ; a bonus of 5s per share, amounting to £12,500 ; and the balance of £8013 8s lid, to be carried to the Profit and Logs account. The barque Annie Main sailed for London on the 28th. Among her cargo were 51 tons of Gunpowder belonging to the Imperial ! Government. Major Heaphy, V.C., has resigned his seat in the House of Eepresentatives for ParnelL The Hon Mr Gisborne, the Colonial Secretary, and Mr Reader Wood, 1 are spoken of as candidates for the seat thus rendered vacant. The Governor and Mr M'Lean will return to Auckland from the Bay of Islands on Sunday next. New Plymouth, April, 25th. Patea, April 29th. The Omata election has resulted in the return of Mr F. A. Carrington, Superintendent of Taranaki, by a majority of 7 votes. Both the candidates for the seat stated at the nomination that they were strong supporters of the Fox Ministry. The s.s. Ahuriri, with the English mails on board, had to pass without being communicated with, the weather being too stormy to allow of a boat putting off to her. : :
