A REPLY.

m (to the editob op thb timbs.) Sib, — The unpaid " energetic Secretary and Treasurer of the Clarendon Q-. &Q. M. Co., Long wood" (who has paid his £5 like an honest man), presents his compliments to the "Shareholder," who contributes an inuendo sort of letter to your contemporary, and begs to inform him that the reason the company is not wound up, may be very easily summed up in the fact that he individually declines positively to put himself in an invidious position by suing defaulters, and expects such steps to be taken by the Managing Committee. Further, that the auditors have throughout certified to the accuracy of the expenditure, for which vouchers were produced in all cases, the only portion of the statement to which they of course could ' not certify being " probable assets and liabilities," which, owingto the scene of operations being at such a distance, could only be made up 'as near the mark as possible. Now, sir, having replied to the " Shareholder" in the complimentary phraseology of the third person, I will conclude by asking you a question. Is it fair or gentlemanly in the shareholder of a private company to make use of the columns of a public paper as a means of attack under a norn de plume upon an honorary officer ? : I am, yours, &c, D. Maceobie. Invercargill, 30th April, 1870.
