LONDON WOOL REPORT.

The commencement of the February sales, which, in accordance with the resolution, passed on the Bth October last, stood fixed for the 10th of the month, was, in consequence of the prevalenre of adverse winds, and the paucity of arrivals, postponed to the 17th instant. The ouantitv forward amounted to —

have passed the hammer to this date inclusive. The attendance of buyers in the sale room has been so far very numerous, and the ■ competition animated and brisk, but the prices paid do not show the extent of improvement which had, previous to the opening of the series, been generally expected. We quote all descriptions of Australian and New Zealand wool as were represented in the November sales, fully equal to the highest rates then current, or about a full id above the closing I The Port Phillip wools of the new clip which ! have been so far catalogued have been eagerly competed for afc very full rates, especially those in the grease. It is, however, impossible to institute any fair comparison as regards the value of such _ descriptions with the prices of the November sales, which included a very small selection of ; wools of a similar class, while the variation noticeable In the condition and growth would render any relative statement of quotations as. compared with the same period of last year, misleading. The fresh arrivals of New Zealand wool comprised only 1,748 bales*, all of the old clip, and consists chiefly of scoured and fellmongered : parcels. Several flocks, however, which were held over from previous sales have been offered, end have commanded their full share of competition. Among these we may especially mention the Castle Eock superior battery washed flocks. We have no new feature to notice in the general condition of the woolen industry, which both at home and abroad is healthy and satisfactory,, and though the quantity of wool, which during the next two series will come upon the market, will no doubt be very considerable, we do not anticipate any material variation in value. The second series of wool sales for the current ' year will, as at present arranged, open on the 7th April. We are happy to be enabled to include in our supplement for this mail the report of the Lon- ' don committee of merchants to the Chamber of Commerce of Melbourne, on the subject "of the conduct of the wool saleß. There appears, however, to be considerable doubt, whether it has obtained the unanimous assent of all the members.
