A Yankee Stort.— -A gentleman from the rural districts presented himself at the bos office of the National Theatre, Washington, one evening, while the Lydia Thompson Troupe were performing there, and when the bill of the evening was the burlesque of the "FortyThieves." Slowly unwinding about a yard of red tape from one of those indescribable leather half-purse half-wallet contrivances, that nobody but a countryman was ever known to possess, the verdant visitor pushed a dollar bill to the ticket seller, quietly remarking as he did s0: — «l think I'll see this ere show, jedge." " Orchestra ?" said the ticket seller, inquiringly. " I don't keer," says country, without the faintest suspicion as to what the word "orchestra" meant. The indefatigable agent whisked away the money, and slapped down a ticket on the little board, in front of the pigeonhole, with that marvellous celerity which is only acquired by long practice; at the same time repeating the customary " All right, sir ; pass to the left, if you please." • But country did not pass to the left, not a bit of it ; he wanted " change." Not having seen in the whole course of his life an exhibition where more than twentyfive cents was the charge, he was in expectation of receiving seventy-five cents change. The ticket agent explained to him — in that awfully official voice that all theatrical people are supposed to possess —that one dollar was the usual price ; and, to prove his assertion, took up a bill of the performance, whereon he pointed out to his customer the printed rates of admission, and the announcement in conspicuous type, " Forty Thieves." " Look here, squire, this is the forty thieves, is it?" "Yes, sir." "Well, then, you kin just take and keep that ere ticket, for I don't think I want to see the other thirtynine!" The proprietors of the * Boston Evening Transcript ' and * Traveller ' have been employing female compositors since 18S4,They are said to give great satisfaction, and work at full wages. The exclusion of the Mormons and all polygamists from the privileges of citizenship in the United States or Territories is proposed in a -Bill introduced into th« House of Bepresentatives by Bfr Cullom.
