Latjnoestoit, March 19. The case of Warren, one of the Christy Minstrels, arrested on a charge of criminal assault, was called on at the police court to-day, when the girl refused to give evidence. She was committed to prison for 14 days for contempt of court, and Warren was released on entering into^his own recognisances to appear when called on. The general impression now is that the charge has been tramped up.March 22. Mr John Goithrie, inspector-general of Customs, Victoria, died this morning at Panshanger, the residence of the Hon. Joseph Archer. Hobabt Town, March 22. The polling for the election took place yesterday. Returns. from ; six places were received, giving Whyte 43 votes, and Groves 18. Three further returns have to come in. March 23. The rifle shooting by the volunteer artillery for the G-overnment prizes came off yesterday and to-day. 59 points won the first prize in the 2nd class, and 68 points in the Ist class. Latjtncestoit, March 23. The first puddling-maehine in Tasmania was started by the Back Creek Company, Piper's Eiver, on Saturday. Ten loads yielded 3ozs 15dwt. Great surprise has been expressed at the crushing of 100 tons of apparentlyrich quartz at the Union Company's works, Fingal, which yielded^ only^ a few ounces of amalgam. An investigation into the circumstances is proceeding. The tenders for the Launceston and Western railway station buildings are considerably above the engineer's estimate, and none has been accepted. v Hobajrt Toww, March 24. Mr James Baynton, an old colonist, and father-in-law of Capt. E. Lucas, died yesterday at the advanced age of 77. The ships in harbor have lowered their ■flags out of respect for the deceased gentleman. '■■. ■ The old market tolls for one year have been leased by auction to Messrs Tolman and Pregnell. Flour is selling at . dßlli firm ; wheat,/ 4s 7d ; oats, 2s 7d ; potatoes, £3. March 26. At a meeting of the Clarence MunicipalCouncil, the resignation of Mr P. J. Thomas, clerk and superintendent of. police, at present in Sydney on leave of absence, was read, but held in abeyance. The council considered the resolutions adopted at a meeting of rate-payers, held on the 12th inst., and pursuant to recommendation resolved to refer the council's accounts from the beginning to four accountants. Wheat is firm at 4s 9d. Other quotations are unchanged.
