CHURCH OF ENGALAND BAZAAR.
The congregation un ler the pastoral charge of the Rev. W. P. Tanner haa for some time found its finances balance the wrong wiy— a too common circumstance with religious bodies generally — xnd, feeling the necessity for extra effort, some tira-) sines determined to resort to a very popular mode of raising money — a bazaar. Steps were at once taken to coll 'Ct a sufficient quantity of " general merchandise," knickknacks, toys, curiosities, fee. &!., anrl the ladiss set up a general manufactory for a variety of articles of which they alona kaow the name*. The 16th and 17th of the present month were in luo time fixed for the fancy fair, and the Exchange Hill, admirably suited for the purpose, was secured as the scene ofoperations. On Wednesday, accordingly, the pu'ilic ware invited to visit the bazaar and invest their loose cash, first in gaining admittance, and next in purchasing the tempting wares displayed by still more tempting saleswoman. The stalls were arranged under the side-wing of the building, the main floor being left free for p<*om.»naders. Business was principally under the direction of Alesdaraes J". W. .Mitchell, Wade, Tanner, Evans, Pettingal, and Tibbits, assisted by a host of smart young ladies, most of whom showed themselves experts at persuading innocent young gentlemen to hand over good sterling money in exchange for some falderal or another for which bachelors could have no earthly use. Miss Trumble undertook the duties of postmaster, and conducted, with great pecuniary gain to the department, a very heavy mail service. In the evening Mr (Joodsir negociated a great many transactions on the "all-prizes-and-no blanks " system. The number of visitors on both days was very encouraging ; at night especially the place was fairly crowded, and' the different " establishments " were pretty well cleared out. Altogether, • the ways and means of St. John's must have been considerably augmented by the receipts.
