■Wellington, February 23rd. An old man named Abraham Dowsett, •was found drowned in the harbour this morning. Napies, February 24th. Sergeant Carkeek has turned up all bright at Tapuaebaruru. Mr Way, who has arrived overland from Tauranga, brings the news that an ambuscade waa laid by Te Kooti near Ohiwa, but that be failed to shoot any of the friendlies. As the Hauhaus were returning from the ambuscade, they were met by a party under Kemp, and 12 of them were killed in the fight that ensued. There was no loss on our side. February 27th. News from Auckland to the 24th inst. is to, hand. A monster Native meeting is to be held :at - Ohinemuri shortly, for the purpose of making a hostile demonstration against Tukerkio (?), the most •obstinate opponent of the proposal to open up the district^ A 'monster meeting, at which 1200 miners were present, has been held at the Thames. They petitioned the Government to find them employment, or to grant them passages to the other colonies. The. Superintendent replied that the Government would certainly not grant them passages elsewhere, and that plenty of employment could be had at wages of 5s per diem. The Luna took 1636 ounces of gold from the Thames to Auckland for the 13ank of New Zealand. The following is the latest Hawke's Bay news : — Fifty Ngatiporous under Eopata were to start from Turanganui for the Uriwera country on the 27th. The Arawas and "Wanganuis are advancing into that part of the country under their own chiefs. The Sturt also takes 150 Ahuriri natives to Mohaka to-morrow. Colonel M'Donnell does notaccompany the expedition. All the native tribes engaged will receive a liberal recompense if they succeed in crushing Te Kooti and Kereopa, but will get nothing if they faiLi They, have all agreed to these term's.

Nelson, February 24th. The Waimea Steeplechases came off today, with the following results : — Waimea South Stakes — Rustic, 1 ; Quicksilver, 2 ; Bkek doctor, 3. Seven started. The race was a splendid one. Tito Kowaru, the favorite, was nowhere. Handicap Steeplechase : — Eustic, 1 ; Eclipse, 2. Four started. Trump fell at the second fence, and seriously hurt Taylor, his jockey.
