The Timaru Herald of the 12th inst. contains 4he following with respect to the crops in that district : — Now that much of the grain is cut we are enabled to arrive at a pretty accurate idea as to the actual yield. The oat and barley crops are, taking all in all, in fine condition, and will yield fully up to tbe returns as stated in this journal come weeks since. We regret we cannot say the mom of the wheat crop. On the Timaru downs especially, and in tome parts of the district, rust has played sad havoc, and an authority on the subject naß assured us that no less than 800 acres of wheat in the entire district will be left uncut owing to this plague. Many acres of wheat on the dowß9, which looked remarkably well, and promised a heavy yield at the date cf our return,' have been completely ruined by rust. The same authority also tells us that twenty-two bushels only per acre may be now reckoned on throughout the district, instead of thirty bushels, expected in the first instance by farmers. From what we hear from other quarters, we cannot help thinking that our informant has taken the moat gloomy view of matters, and that when the grain comes into the market the returna will be found heavier than he now anticipates. Agents of the General Government are now at work throughout the province obtaining the agricultural itetistics.
