RIVERTON.
(FBOM OTTB OWN COBBESPOITDEirr.) Feb. 16, 1870. On Thursday, the 10th, the children of the Church ot England Sunday School were most sumptuously entertained, through the liberality of the respected Vicar, in the hall belonging to the order of Oddfellows; the day having turned out too wet for a picnic, as contemplated. It is needless to say the abundance of good things were done ample justice to, and that children, teachers, and friends enjoyed themselves to their heart's content, from noon till late in the evening ; the latter part of the time being devoted to music and singing. When separating, three hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Oldham, who had vied with each other to contribute to the happiness of all concerned.* Last week the southern lights were out very vividly on several occasions. Since then the weather has been boisterous and wet in the extreme. On the evening of the 14th, at 9.45, a large lunar rainbow appeared in the heavens, extending from »outh-east to south-west, and describing a circle of more than 90 ° * It was so bright as to cause its reflection. Bad weather has since continued, and & change would be very acceptable, as harvest has fairly commenced in this neighborhood. A popular entertainment again took place on the evening of the loth, which 1 j am given to understand was not quite up to the usual standard. A gentleman who ! gave an impromptu song on the volunteers indulged in personalities very amusing to some, but calling down the wrath of others. At the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the 16th, an assault case came before Mr Lawlor. The celebrated Mrs (alias Biddy) M'Kay summoned a Mr Eveleigh for assault and battery; the case was clearly proved; but great provocation had been given. The defendant was bound over to keep the peace for six months ; himself in £25, and two sureties in £10 each, or to be imprisoned for six months.
