NORTHERN NEWS.
Napieb, Jan. 31st. A deputation Las waited on Mr M'Lean requesting him to open up the Ohinemuri country as a goldfield. Mr M'Lean replied that the G-overnment had offered Te Hira certain terms, which he^ expected would be accepted. On receiving a reply from Te Hira, he would take action. Mr Firth was arrested at Hamilton as a deserter, but was subsequently released by an order from Colonel Moule. Forty of the King Natives under Maritona left Tokangamutu on the 24th, and joined our forces against Te Kooti. A spy of Te Kooti's has been taken prisoner near the camp at Tapapa. Col. Fraser has not yet joined Col. M'Donnell. News from Auckland states that the schooner Banshee arrived there from Dunedin on the 22nd. The s.s. Auckland arrived from Sydney on the 23rd, and returned on the following day. The City of Auckland has arrived from London, and the Thomas Daniels from Liverpool. Mr John Williamson, late Superintendent of Auckland, has been offered the office of Commissioner of Crown Lands in that province, and will, it is believed, accept it.
