Mr Jolm Brook, Minse street, reports: — T am not aware of any thin? in the produce mar ket calling for special remark ; generally business is very quiet, opening values for the new^ crop are occupying the attention of traders, but in the absence of more full and definite information concerning the Australian markets anything approaching to correct conclusions are difficult to arrive at. The losses of traders during the past season here and in Australia will probably result in extreme caution being exercised. Flour, £12 per ton ; oatmeal, £19 do ; pearl barley, £28 do ; wheat, 4s 9d to 5s per bushel ; oats, 3s do ; maize, 5s do; bran, £5 per ton ; pollard, £5 10s do ,* hay, old, £5 10s do ; hay, new, £4 10s do; chaff, £4 10s do; straw, £2 10s do; potatoes, new £-7 do ; onions, £15 do ; butter, 8d per lb ; cheese, R*d do ; bacon and hams, lOd do ; bags, 143 per dozen. Tbe Oamaru Times of the llth inst. reports j tbat the market there is exceedingly dull, and values for grain uaaltered. Harvesting operations are now general, and the new grain may be expected in the market in three weeks from this date. ; The Timaru Herald of the 13th reports :— The recent failures in this province, and the numerous rumors afloat respecting three or four well known firms in Christchurch have produced an unsettled feeling. In this district, fortunately, we know the worst, and after the lapse of a short time, we believe that confidence will be greatly restored. Grain quotations are merely nominal until the new grain conies forward. Prices generally remain unchanged. We learn that green flax i 3 fetching good prices, 5s per ton havmg been paid for the right of cutting.
