NORTHERN NEWS.
Names, January 6th. Intelligence just received from Taupo states that Te Kooti with 300 followers was at Taumaranui ou the 29th December. On Kemp and Topia advancing, he retreated to Rongorora, where he says he will make a stand against them. Te Waru, the Uriwera chief, has left Te Kooti, aud is desirous of surrendering, but is afraid to do so. Colonel M'Donnell has sent him word, saying, " Come in, and your life will be spared." Te "Wheruanui, another Uriwera chief, has sent word that he will go to Ohinemutu, as soon as he is informed that he will be received there. Floods have prevented Colonel McDonnell and Kemp from advancing. A man named John M'lnness has been drowned in attempting to cross the Mohaka river. January 10th. Intelligence was received at Auckland a week ago to the effect that the King party were reported to have sent for Te Kooti, promising to protect him. This report is now contradicted by a letter subsequently received by Topia from the Bang, approving of the expedition against Te Kooti. Nevertheless uneasiness was for some time felt at Auckland, a report having reached there from the Bay of Plenty that a general native rising had taken place. The rivers have now fallen, and convoy communication is once more open with Taupo.
Wellington, January 7th. Parliament is further prorogued to the 2Sth March. January 10th. The directors of theN.Z.S.N. Co. have discovered that the proceedings at the late general meeting of the shareholders are informal, and they have accordingly called another meeting, to be held on the Bth proximo.
