SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
Adelaide, Dec. 29. Over 3,500 persons visited the Fine Arts Exhibition during the last two days. A fatal accident happened on the Glenelg road last night, whilst the crowd of excursionists were returning to the city. A lady and child were thrown out of a vehicle, the former being tilled on the spot, and the latter so severely injured as not to be likely to recover. The cargo of Natal sugar ex Conguine was all sold to-day at good prices, considering the inferior quality of the shipment. The com market is hardening, owing to a general feeling that the average yield of the crops will be less than was anticipated, many competent judges being of opinion that it will not average more than five bushels to the acre. Flour is worth £10 5s to £11 10 a. Dec. 30. The "Post-office and Telegraph departments will be amalgamated from and after the Ist of January next, and will be placed under the superintendence of Mr Todd, the present manager of telegraphs. Mr "W. 8. Douglas, for many years manager of the Bank of South Australia, has resigned his appointment. Dec. 31st. The Adelaide Gas Company are about to borrow another £15,000 for the purpose of extending their works to the suburbs. Sales of good brands of flour have been effected at £10 12s 6d. There is nothing doing in wheat. Jan. 3. Parliament reassembles to-morrow, when the no-confidence motion will be proposed, with every prospect of its being carried. Mr Bartley, senior lands titles solicitor, declines to recognise a notice from the Government dispensing with his services, on the ground that the notice is in contravention of Torrens's Act. The annual meeting of the Adelaide Meat-preserving Company took place today. The report shows that operations are fully entered upon, with every prospect of a profitable result. The capital of the company is to be increased. Messrs Stow and Bruce, solicitors,;have applied to the Government for the name of the defendant, with a view to commence legal proceedings for the recovery of the money paid for Northern Territory land orders," in order to test the right of the claimants.
