RIVERTON.
(PEO3I OTJB OWN" COUEESPOSDENT.) .. Jan. 8, 1870. The sports here passed off exceedinglywell. The regatta on 3?riday, the 31st, was rather a tame affair ; but as the old year passed away, the bells began their clamour, and the spirits from the " vasty deep" appeared to have awoke, for the noise much, reminded me of old Neptune and suite when we crossed the line ; and in the morning, when the peaceful inhabitants arose, they found in large letters over the house of one of the proprietors of the brewery a sign — " Biverton Medical Hall" ; at another gentleman's door, who, by the way, was instrumental in getting up the pig-race, hung half a side of bacon, unon which he, no doubt, made a good breakfast. However, all passed off very merrily, and the sports on New Tear's Day were admirable; the committee carried out everything in a very fair and liberal manner. The tilting at the ring is arranged in a much better style than at Invercargill, posts being placed all round the ring at equal distances — Mr C. Humphries was the champion. Oa Monday, a pic-nic and dance was got up by the miners, and on Tuesday the Penny Eeadings' Committee gave the last of the series for the season, and although not up to their usual standard, some of the pieces were very well rendered; the music and one or two songs being particularly good. G-reat credit is due to the Committee of Management for the manner in which they have carried out the details, especially the financial department, for although of such short duration, they have purchased a piano, and are able to wind up entirely free from debt — • a bold contrast to Invercargill management in that department.
