"The Gothenburg arrived; at - Hbkitifca " on the 4th inst. from Melbourne, bringing six days' later news. The following is a telegraphic summary: — Melboubne, Dec. 29. Flour continues dull, prices ranging from. £ll to £12 per ton; oats, 3s 6d per bushel ; maize, 3s 4d. Sperm candles firm, at lOfd. Wheat, 5s 4d. Sugars are slightly lower. Hops are advancing. The wool market is very brisk ; greasy, s£d to s|d ; scoured, lOd to 16|d ; fleece, lOd to 17d per lb. The death of Viscount Canterbury is announced. He is brother to his Excellency Governor Sutton, who inherits the title and estates. The Waverley, from Foo-Chow-Foo for Auckland, which was supposed to be lost, has turned up at Batavia. Thomas W. Draper, accountant to the Commercial Bank, has been arrested on a charge of forgery, supposed to amount to a considerable sum. Bail was taken. The holidays extended over three days. Business was entirely suspended. A compromise regarding the amendments on the Land Bill has been agreed to by both Houses. The Bill has been passed. Parliament was prorogued to-day. Sailed. — Sarah, for Greymouth; Margaret Campbell, for Wellington. Arrived. — Claud Hamilton, on the 28th. The Victorian Sugar Company have published a refutation of the charges made by New Zealand papers that their ! sugar contains arsenic. Sydney. The Challenger has sailed for Auckland to embark the 18th Eegiment. Archibald, a publican at Rockhampton, has been executed. He made no confession regarding Halligan's murder. Eev. W. B. Clarke, the celebrated geologist, has resigned his incumbency. The Flying Squadron sailed for Hobart Town on Sunday. Arrived.— At Newcastle, Deva, from Auckland; Ann Melhuish, from Wellington. The Auckland steamer arrived on the 28th, bringing a detachment of the 18th Regiment. Elections to date give 26 Ministerialists, 28 Opposition, and 7 Neutrals. A.DELAIDE. A destructive bush fire has occurred at Yorke Peninsula destroying 1800 sheep, a shepherd and a boy. The corn market i 3 firm. Wheat firm at 4s 6d per bushel. Government has called for tenders for the leasing of the Strathalbyn, Goohva, and Victor Harbor Tramway.
