AGRICULTURE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
The agricultural statistics for the harvest 186S-9, published by the Government statist, prove very disappointing. In the early part of the season confident expectations, were put forth that the average yield must be about 12 bushels per acre. The crops, however, did not turn out so well as they promised, and the actual average was only 9J bushels per acre. Tins is very much below the average of the five years prior to last year, which was about 12 bushels per acre. The following table shows the average under wheat, the total produce and average price during the year for five years .* — Average price Acreage. Produce, for the year, s. d. 1863-4 ... 335,753 ... 4,691,519 4 10 1864-5 ... 39\83f) ... 4,252,800 7 10 1865-6 ... 410,608 ... 3,537,800 8 7 1866-7 ... 458,628 ... 6,561,415 6 2 1867-8 ... 550,056 ... 2,571,894 4 5 This year the number of acres under wheat* cultivation is 532,G5i, or 17,802 acres less than the previous year. This fact suuports the theory that after a good harvest the average of wheat sown is higher, and after a bad harvest, less.
