Messrs M'Landress Hepburn and Co. report that they yesterday held, at the stores of Mr J". W. , Jago, in Sfeuart-streefci the firat of their periodical sales by auction of flax and fco~. The sale attracted* large .attendance of merchants and others interested in the manufacture of flax. The whole .quantity offered met with a spirited competition on the part of the buyers, and was sold as follows : — 15 bales flax, scutched, £25 per ton ; 32 do do, unscutched, £20 5s per ton ; 15 do do, scutched, £25 per ton ; 26 ,do do do, £21 per ton ; 3 do do, unscutched, £14 5s per ton ; 9 do do do, £18 per ton ; 5 do do do, £16 10s per ton ; 14 bales tow, £12 per ton •, 5 do do, £12 per ton. ' Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report for the week ending the 20th instant as follows : — Fat cattle— Market well suplied ; two lots sold privately having come forward ; none have been yarded. We sold privately for delivery 25 head, at 30s per lOOlbs., at which figure we quote prime beef; middling 255. To-day we yard 30 head, extraordinary fine quality and heavy weights — paddock fed--from Messrs Maitland Bros.'s station. Fat sheep — There was & considerable reduction in the supply this Week ; and good tots coaling forward will sell readily at 3d per lb. in wool ; 2d to 2\d shorn. We sold for delivery, 6QO ewes, at 2£d ; and 400 wethers, at 3d in wool ; also ' 300 ewes and 300 wethers, in one lot, shorn, at 2d per lb. Fat lambs, in demand ; we sold at auction 50 good at from 9s to lis each ; 30 middling, 6s 6d to 7s 6d ; and privately, '380 to be delivered, at 7s to 9s. Store stock — We have several good lots of store cattle for sale, but there are very few inquiries. We can place from.BoQo to 10,00.0 store" Merino wefbers and- half breds in wool, but holders are not disposed to sell until after shearing. , We quote Merino wethers, 6s 6d to 6s 9d ; half -breds, 2 and 4-tootb, 7s 6d to Bs. Horses: — There is no improvement to be rioted. We held two sales, and disposed of a large number of inferior animals at their fall value. Quotations: Heavy draught. £40 to £50 ; medium do, £25 to £33 ; first-class hacks and light harness horses, £25 to £30 ; useful do, £12 to £18 ; inferior, £2 10s and upwards. Mr John Brook, Mahse-street, reports :— The price of flour remains without change, but for which the demand is slack. Wheat' is somewhat lower in value, and the quotations not easily obtained ; oats and oatmeal have further receded in value,- tbe demand is qtiiet and quotations are obtained with difficulty ; potatoes remain without improvemeni/. — Flour, _i 4 10s per ton ; oatmeal, L23do ; pearl barley, L2B. do; wheat 5s 9d per bushel ; oats, '4s do ; barley, 5s 6d do ; maize, 5s 6d do ; bran, L 7 per ton ; pollard, L 7 10s do; hay, L 6 do; chaff, L 4 10s do ; straw L 2 10s do ; potatoes, L 3 do ; carrots, L 3 do ; turnips, L 3 10s do ; butter, Is per lb ; cheese, lOJd do ; bacon, 9d do j bags, 14s, per dozen.
