CAMPBELLTOWN.

The nomination of candidates to fill the vacant seat in the Council took place at the Court-house, Campbelltown, at noon on the 19th inst., The Returning Officer read the writ, an I called on the electors to propose a properly qualified person to represent the district. Mr Longuet proposed, and Mr Waddel seconded, Mr T. M. Macdonald. Mr J. W\ Mitchell proposed, and Mr Grarthwaite seconded, Mr J. E. Cuthbertson.
On a show of hands bein? taken, it was declared to be in favor of Mr Macdonald.
A poll was then demanded on behalf of 'Mr Cuthbertson.
The poll took place on the following day. Shortly after 9 o'clock (the hour appointed for opening the booth), all the rssident electors, with one or two exceptions, recorded their votes in favor of the union candidate, and by the 10.15 train from Invercargill about an equal number of vote 3on each s'de arrived. Great exertions were put forth by both parties. The locomotive, unattended by carriages, was to be Seen traversing the line at almost lightning speed, to convey electors from Green Hills and other parts of the railway works. By the train which arrived at 3 p.m. another batch of electors, accompanied by a number of town friends, arrived. The business of the day was conducted in the most orderly manner.
At the close of the poll, the Returning Officer announced the number of votes to be as follows : —
Macdonald 29 Cuthbertson 24 In returning thanks, Mr Macdonald said he had reason to be proud of the position which he occupied, as the contest had been a very close one. He was pleased the electors had asserted their independence, and he congratulated them upon having achieved so decided a victory, for the antiunionparty had brought forward their best man, Mr Cuthbertson being a gentleman who might contest any district in the province. Mr M'Pherson returned thanks for Mr Cuthbertson. lie was certain if that gentleman had been present, they would have witnessed a different result.
A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer terminated one of the most exciting elections that has ever occurred at the Bluff.
