THE NELSON AND WEST COAST RA ILWAY.

Theifollbwing ; lettef 10b- been recei ved by tjie Superintendent of -Nelaon from Mr Morrison, of the N^^Zeftlind Government Agency, London. It i& d.iteJ August 10th :— --' " Siß,r-rSiiice_ I ,had .....the honor .to address you on the 18th May last upon the subject of the Nelson and Cobden .R iilway, jvhen I. also enclosed a copy ,, of a letter from Colonel Maude explaining certain difficulties that he had experienced in carrying out his proposed scheme^ with reference to it, I regret to say that, notwithstanding continued exertion on my part, I have been unable to make • further progress towards securing the cooperation of capitalists in other quarters, to promote the construction of that important undertaking. " The prominent manner in which, of late, the affairs of New Zealand have been brought before the Euglish public, has essentially prejudiced all enterprise in connection with the colony. " The Colonial securities have been likewise depreciated in value by reason of the unsettled state of nitive affairs in the North Island ; the public, refusing to distinguish that the Middle Island is exempt from such troubles, assume that the local disturbances in the North affept the whole colony. It is, therefore, in my opinion undesirable, in the present state of matters, to press into notice the claimo of tho Nolann and Cobden .Railway ; but you may rest assured j I will continue watchful, and be prepared to carry out the wishes of the Goveenment whenever a suitable occasion offers." !
