THE WAIANIWA REPRESENTATIVE.
(to thb bditob of the times.) Sib, — In a letter in your last week's paper, signed J. 8., the writer states that Mr Lyon is a professed anaexationist, and that Mr Wilson resigned in his favor, and told the electors to vote for the ne\v nominee, which they again obediently did. It was not on account of Mr Wilson telling the electors to vote for Mr Lyon that they ; did so. It was for the following reason :— A public meeting was held on the Saturday night before the nomination, and it was attended by the principal
landowners of ibis district. Ifc was' then decided, when Mr Lyon was defeated at Aparima, to ask Km to stand for this district, if he would"; consent to go in. to the Council and do^the best he could for the province for twelve months^ and back up any scheme that lwoui<p-*De calculated to steer the Provincial bark clear of the breakers, and if afi^schemes failed in twelve months, he was to advocate reunion to Otago. Mr Lyon also 'pledged his word to the electors, before the close of the poll at Flint's Biishj that he would "abide by the foregoing promise if elected ; he also promised ? that at abViime the -electors were no 6 satisfied ,wi tn his conduct in the Council, if they would convene two public meetings, by notice three times inserted in the two weekly papers, to be held at Flint's Bush and Waianiwa at the same- time, and if the majority of the electors* attending such meetings asked him to resign his seat in the C?ouncil, he would dp sd immediately. As I was one of Mr Lyon's requisi* tibhistd, you will oblige me. very- much by publishing in your next week's paper the foregoing letter. As it is well known that lam no advocate of re-union, the public wjould think that I wore a reversible coat, like our friend Mr Wilson! If Mr Lyon enlists in the re-union ranks when in the Qouncil. all I can say is that he got iv by the back door, and not in an honorable way, as the majority^ of_the people here aife not in favor of re-union until . eyerytHing.,else fails.f^-Tours, &c, : f I ' ' Chajkles Qunr. }li©saan.
