The growing importance of flwdrwMing m • colonial industry (says the Examiner) muei il desirable that it should extend to Nelson m quickly as possible, and in order that any assistance to be given by the Government in introducing machines here may be really serviceable, his Honor the Superintendent has decided oa despatching the Provincial Engineer to Canterbury, Wellington, and Auckland, where flaxdressing is now prosecuted, to ascertain the best kind of machine in use, and acquire other inforI mation that may be useful to persons disposed to engage in the industry. The fact that the price obtained for flax varies very largely, is a proof how desirable it is that money should not b« wasted on inferior machines, and that the best information as to the treatment of the fibre should be obtained. The first election for the new Provincial Council took' place on the Ist inst, when, on the proposition of P. M'Eellar, Esq., seconded by Qt. Webster, Esq., Alex. M'Neill, Esq., of Ardlussa, wai declared duly elected as the member for the Oreti district.
