POPULATION OF OTAGO.
(TO THB EDITOR OP THB TIME 3.) Sib,— lt may be fresh in the memory of some of your readers that Mr G. Lumsden contradicted a statement of mine with reference to the past andpresent population of Otago, viz. : — " That neither the falling off in the yield of gold from .£2,000,000 to £600,000, nor the counter-attraction of the Auckland goldfields, had caused any considerable reduction in the population of Otago." Mr Lumsden, on the other hand) asserted that " the population of Otago had decreased by nearly twenty thousand." I herewith hand you New Zealand Government statistics, showing that the population of Otago has fallen off to the extent of 442 only, and not nearly 20,000, as stated by Mr Lumsden. — Yours, &c, William Wood.
