MELBOURNE. The Argus of the 6th inst., reports :— In the import markets business has shown little animation, and outside the auction rooms no transactions of any special importance have come under our notice. In breadstuffs there were no sales to report. Holders of flour still continue to ask from £IQ 10s to £17 10s, according to brand and quantity. These prices, however, must be considered nominal, in the face of auction sales at £15 5s for Newstead flour, and £15 10s for Mount Gambier flour. Maize is very dull, and sales are difficult to make ; trade parcels are quitted at 5s to 5s Id, while for a line of 500 bags, 4s lid was accepted. Oats are quoted at 5s 3d to 5s 6d. No actual sales have come before us, but wo hear of a large parcel being under treaty. At auction, inferior oats were quitted at a low figure, but superior samples offered at same time were withdrawn for 5s 6d. A large business is done in candles ; 3,300 boxes were got rid of under the hammer at an improvement on late public sales. A line of 2,000 boxes saloons was taken up at 10£ d. D.R.O.'s, Cameron's, and Goudas were cleared aff at lOf.i ; and for slightly damagsd lots lOd to 10^d was obtained. The chief feature in the day's operations was the sale of new season's teas, by the Edgar Ross ; the entire cargo, amounting to 9,533 packages, was quitted at the following prices : — Siftings, in chests and ha!f^|tfttMteurfit 6£d to 8d ; boxes, at 11yd to Is Medium to good medium congous, in chests and halves, brought from Is Id to Is 6d; boxes, Is 4£d to Is 7d., while fine to superfine realised Is 8d to 2s 4?d for chests and half chests. Sugar is quiet, the sale of the Confiance's damaged portion only be'ng reported, but the market will be enlivened by the offer, to-morrow forenoon, of the Marie's cargo of Java, amounting to 23,170 mats. A shipment of 50 bales gunnybags was quitted at 7s. An invoice of Culoian's goods, starch and mustard, changed hands at a full figure. The whole of the Eli Whitney's cargo of Oregon timber, comprising 447,8981't. super, was disposed of at prices which show increa-ed firmness for that particular sort ; the bidding was very spirited. For Baitic and other descriptions, however, the market is very heavy, and the tendency is downward rather than otherwise. Morewood's corrugated iron, 26 gauge, was plared at £28 for 9ft. and £26 10s for 6ft. In liquids, we note sales of Tennent's bottled ale at 10s It has come under the notice of the agents of this brand that inferior ale, b. ttled in the colony, is offered under a colorable imitation, and bearing the trade mark on Tenuertt's label. Doubtless some action will be tii ken to put a stop to the practice.
