(TO THB KDITOB OS THB SOTTTHLAW© TIMB8.) Sin,— Had the contributor to your contemporary, signed "' Joseph Mackay," known Dr Menzies as well as I know "Joseph Mackay," he would scarcely impute to the honourable gentlemen what his bitterest opponents would never do, namely, a mis-statement. Southland knows, whatever his supposed faults, that Dr Menzies is punctilious as regards veracity, or even ambiguity, and, for the benefit of your readers. I may state that Mr " Joseph Mackay " belongs, nay, is an ornament, to a profession which considers everything fair in the advocacy of the cau?eit may happen to espouse, namely, the press. — I am &c, Tttapeka. Invercargill, Bth Oct., 1869.
