Melbourne, September 28th. The Ministerial elections are causing great excitement. Mr Vale is opposing Mr Reeves for Collingwood. Mr Bolfe is opposing Mr Byrne. The English news has improved trade. The running of third class railway carriages has been resumed. The continued dry weather is causing great uneasiness. The Lord Bishop of Melbourne has proclaimed the seventh of October as a day for special prayer for rain. Commercial:— Flour is at £17 to £17 10s for country, and £18 for town brands. No wheat is offering. Maize is at 5s 3d for trade parcels. Oats are steady at 5s 4d to 5s 4£d. Numerous arrivals of the new season's teas have taken place. 1,100 chests have been sold at from Is 01 (?) [to Is 9^d. Large parcels of candles of the best brands are at lOf d, and an I advance is likely. Kerosene is firm. A large parcel has been quitted at Is lid to Is Hid. Cornsacks are dull at 12s 9d. Sydney, September 27th. In reference to the enquiry into the circumstances attending the seizure of the schoner Daphine from the South Sea Islands, His Honour Chief Justice Stephen has expressed the opinion that the Islanders found on board of that vessel were neither slaves nor intended for slavery. Intelligence has been received that Count Van Attems, whose swindles caused such great sensation both here and in Queensland, has been sentenced to twenty-two months' imprisonment at Sourabaya. It is reported that a diamond weighing 52 carats has been found in Verelli. The Bank of New South Wales at Mailland, N .S. W., has dismissed two clerks, in consequence of the recent loss of notes. Maize is quoted at 4s 3d, with better supply. __________
