Coast nrtives, to the effect that an engagement had taken place between Te Kooti and the Colonial forces, in which the latter were worsted. » The following Australian telegrams are taken from the ' Daily Times ' of 7th inst : — Melbourne, August 31st. The Malta arrived in Hobson's Bay at half-pact three ou Sunday afternoon. The Adelaide mails were transhipped. A ladies' velocipede race took place at the Collingwood Sports on the 28th. The subscriptions in aid of the released Fenians amount to £4000. Mrs Heir took her farewell benefit at the Theatre Eoyal on the 27th. She is
about to return to New Zealand. Four hundred Chinese sail for Dunedin by the next steamer. A Proprietary College, with a capitul of £15,000, has been established. A testimonial, in the shape of a purse of sovereigns and a silver tea service, has been presented to Dr Barker. Mr Fawkner is seriously ill. The Chief Secretary's resolutions, proposing to abolish State aid to religion, have been carried. The Count de la Konciere, Q-overnor of Tahiti, goes home by the next mail steamer. t , , The Somersetshire arrived m Hobaon s Bay on the 30th with 200 passengers, after a voyage of 58 days. Sydney. M'Kinlay has been arrested on a
second charge of embezzling £2000 worth j of drapery. The investigation into the cause of the Daphne has been adjourned sine die, and a commission has been appointed to take evidence regarding the slave trade in the South Sea Islands. A boat race between 12 men belonging to the Kearsage and ten of the Naval Brigade, was won by the latter. Maize is at 3s 7d. Tea 3 are dull at auction. Adelaide. Mr "Weld has sailed for Freemantle in the schooner Alexandra. Captain G-rainger and the crew of the Balclutha have been publicly thanked by Sir James Fergusson. A subscription has been commenced for a testimonial to Captain Grainger.
