- ■ ■» The ' Argus' of the 26th ult., contains the following items of late European and American news : — Sydney, July 24. The Annie Main has brought San EranCisco dates to the 25th May ; and from the papers to hand the following items are extracted :— Messrs Scheppler and Co., German bankers, having a large European connection, have failed at New York, Liabilities, ten million dollars. - !!The Pacific Eailway is running satisfactorily. A Spanish war vessel is reported to have fired into- and sunk a British brig off the coast of Cuba. A telegram, dated London, May 23, states that ,o'Sullivan, who had resigned . the niayotfalty of Cork on account of the action, taken in Parliament upon his seditious speech at a pnblic dinner, had ' been re-elected mayor. Prince Augustus is a candidate for the Spanish throne. Queen Isabella has stated
her willingness to formally abdicate in favor of her son. Admiral To pete has been appointed Minister for the Colonies. The revolution in Cuba continues to be conducted with gre<vt activity. The Eoyal Cannadian Bank, Toronto, has stopped payment. A great fire had occurred at Cincinati, by which six large steamers were destroyed, besides other property. President Grant and Senator Sumner have quarrelled.
San Fbancisco, May 25. Australian coals are quoted at 12dols. The market for breadstuff^ is rather firmer ; flour quoted at 4dol. to 4.25d01. ; wheat, 1.25d01. to 1.55d01. ; barley, 1.20d0l to 1.45d01. ; oats, 1.35d0l to 1.70d01.
