(PEOMOTTR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) DuNEDUf, August 5 th. Mr Henmngham, Editor of the ' Echo' has beea committed to trial at the Supreme Court, for libel. The suit was instituted by Mr Driver, concerning whom, something which he considered libellous had appeared in the columns of the ' Echo.' HeDningham is out on bail, bis own recognizances for £100, being accepted. "Wellington, 4th August. In the Assembly yesterday, Mr M'Lean moved his resolution proposing that coin- • missioners be appointed to proceed to England for the purpose of obtaining Imperial aid to put down the rebellion. He proposes to ask for 1500 men for fire years. Mr Stafford moved as an amendment that " This House will not sanction the expenditure of colonial funds in payment of Imperial troops beyond the same required for one regiment, to be stationed as garrisons in such centres of population as the Governor may appoint, with a view to the moral effect which, in. the opinion of this House, the presence of a small body of troops produces on the minds of the natives, both loyal and disaffected, and that a select committee be appointed to prepare an address to Her Majesty embodying the conditions on which she will be requested to station such a legimentiti New Zealand." The debate on the question has not yet ended. The amendment is likely to be strongly supported.
