Commercial News.

TiMEa Oppicb, Thursday Evening. It cannot be said that the paßt month has been marked by any perceptible improvement in mercantile 'affairs. Trade in all brunches continues quiet, neither are there auy indications of increased demands for some time to come. Public credit, however, appeirs to be sound, and business generally to be conducted on safe principles, at least nothing has occuired for a long time to create apprehension or cause uneasiness. Importers, likewise, continue to keep their stock B full, with a tendency rather to increase than reduce them, -which shows they look forward to the operations of the approaching summer with confidence. Breadstuff's have lately been imported in considerable parcels, which has had the effect of slightly reducing quotations for the higher brands. Colonial and provincial flour remains at its former figure, and the latter is rising in the estimation of the trade. As tho'conaumption is purely local the dtmandcan be easily anticipated, consequently, it is not likely that much alteration in prices will take place for some time. The proposed import duty on grain, if carried, will give an impetus £to colonial milling, and. most likely ultimately put a stop to the importation of foreign flour. Oats have advanced considerably since last month and are now in brisk demand. Several large parcels are still in the hands of the growers, who do not manifest any great anxiety to take advantage of the rise, in expectation of a further advance being obtained. The favor with which the ales of local brewers have recently been laceived lias greatly limited the importation of that article, and, by creating a demand for malt, is causirj our farmers to turn their attention largely to the growth of good barley. Other liquor 3, both in wood and glass, are in full supply at v laltered quotations, excepting geneva, of which stocks are rather low* Sugar still maitains a high valu e, although about £2 per ton overhead easier than at our last quotations. The decline mentioned, however, is slight, compared with the praviou* rise of *b out £10, and shows that the markets are still low, neither can much reduction be looked for until at least another crop comes forward. The demand for staple provisions, hams bacon, butter, cheese, &c, is now almost ' entirely supplied by local producers. In addition to the manufacture of flour, several naw industries are receiving a fair trial, and promise to be successful, while strenuous efforts are at the same time being made to develop other resources. Hope, leather, soap, and candles, are now produced in large quantities by local manufacturers, and threaten soon to exclude the foreign article. A prospecting association has also been formed under most favorable auspices, for the purpose of searching the province for minerals, while more recently it has been rumored that the Australian and New Zealand Lund Company are ready to resume their extensive farming operations in the Eastern district, if any hope is held out that th« means of communication with the port will be improved, and they further propose to add a boiling-down establishment to their already extensive premises. Prices current will be found in detail below : —
