LEFT BEHIND.
(to the editob of the southland times.) Sib — Permit me to call attention to the following portion of a letter which appeared in the ' Southland News ' of the 26th October, 1864 :— "The sticking of the engine at the Makarewa incline last Tuesday night seems to very many people an incontrovertible reason for condemning the wooden railway as a total failure. " Now the fact of the, engine ' sticking ' as it did last Tuesday night dde^s not appear to me to afford even a ray of evidence on which to hang such an opinion. "From the four following reasons amongst others, I do not hesitate to assert that, if the rails had been iron instead of wood, not the slightest difference would have resulted in the conduct of the engine. " Ist. The start had to be made on a curve, " 2nd. The start had to be made on the incline (one in ninety I am informed.) " 3rd. The rails had been smudged all up the incline with the stiff yellow clay of the bank. " 4th. The engine-driver had no sand, and was unable to get any on account of the darknessi — I am, «fee, " (Signed) " Chables D. Ibvine, " Civil Engineer." No doubt the above remembrance will be very interesting to the Civil Engineer in present circumstances. — I am, &c, Observes. July 15th, 1869.
