RECENT EARTHQUAKE.

The Meteorological Director, C. R. Marten, Esq. reports as follows : — " Martendale, June 24th — This morning about 11 o'clock, local time, there were three sharp shocks of earthquake, preceded by a rumbling noise and followed after a short interval by a slighter shock and a tremulous motion. No direction can be assigned to the shocks which had a peculiar twisting movement, and were unusually powerful. The barometer stood at 30.141 inches. The following particulars regarding the effects of the late earthquake at Oamaru, are furnißhed by the local journal : — In and near the town the effects produced were very manifest, though not serious. Even in stone houses and offices chairs and desks rocked backwards and forwards quite visibly. The motion appeared to be from east to west. The oscillation was distinctly felt in the Resident Magistate's Court, the Court being sitting at the time. The reporters' table and the magistrate's desk rocked to and fro and one man among those in the body of the court, noticing the doors to rattle violently, actually got up and opened the door, thinking gome one was seeking admission. Bottles were shaken from shelves, and from a boarding-house in Thames street the children ran frightened into the street.
