THE MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

The Mutual Improvement Society held their usual weekly meeting on the evening of Monday last, sth inst., in the Hall of the Presbyterian Church, Tay-street. Being the evening specially Bet apart for readings, several of the younger members made their first appearance before an audience in that character, and on the whole acquitted themselves most creditably. The style of each reader was freely criticised by the members present, and defects pointed oat, the remarks, even when fault-finding being given and taken in a spirit of friendliness which was commendablealike to all concerned, and which, if maintained, will bo productive ot much good. A recitation by Master Fraser, whose clear articulation and admirable pronunciation were much praised, brought the literary part of the proceedings to an end, after which some little matters connected with the rules werel&scussed, and several new members proposed. »
