RAGGED SCHOOL.
(TO THB BDITOB OV THB SOUTHLAND TIMKS.) Sib — As a member of the Eagged School Committee I wish to mention that the projected concert on behalf of that Institution is without the knowledge of the Committee. The funds of the Bagged School certainly need replen- j ishing, but it is questionable whether* at I the present time, a concert, unless by arrangement with the Committee df the Popular Entertainments, would accomplish the emd. — Tour's truly, One 0* 1 the Ragged School Committee. j June 24th, 1869,
(TO THE EDITOK OV THE SOTTTHIiAVd Tll£ES ) Sir — A " Well-wisher" ia your contemporary, of 24th June, has announced that • he looked in on the re-union meeting, which was held in the Exchange Hall, on ' the 19th inst. (and was a good deal 1 struck with the class of men who spoke ' against re-union.) Pray who may he I be? Has he arrived from Hobartown? or does he carry a chignon of extra \ virtue on his head ? He speaks first of a ' dealer in small wares. Who deals in large ' wares here ? Secondly — Of a merchant J who deals chiefly in nobblers, and who is f always in a " muddle." Thirdly — Of a [ dentist, who, only being a traveller pass--5 ing through, may remind one as a neutral ' honest man, who was not accustomed to [ the lay of the country. Fourthly — A. 5 political attorney ; what kind ot person is that ? The people who are opposed to the movement of annexation to the province of Otago may justly say — and I fearlessly say so — that there is a narrowminded spirit displayed by the opposite party as plain as a splash ' of black ink on a white board. I shall sign my name to this letter and j not like " Well-wisher," shelter myself ' under a cognomen, and will ask him " whether honest labor, growing potatoes, 5 selling nobblers, driving express waggons, or land jobbing, are not all equally ' honorable ? I would ask again if there 1 is not a strong desire on the part of certain originators of this movement to 5 obtain delegates posts with a liberal allovr--1 ance per day ? Current report says, the 1 printing for this organisation has been j done gratuitously. Is that not highly suggestive ? Indeed tbe bad taste displayed in the way and manner of certain ' members connected with the annexation move raent became so apparent to the meet- ' ing, that in plain terms and in plain language the people left disgusted. I am, &c. 1 John Weight. | 24th June, 1869.
