SIMMER'S AWAY. « By John Or. Smith. » Nae langer the flow'rets Smile o'er the green lea, Nae langer the gowan - Faulds up its saft e'e, Nae langer the birdies On ilk leafy spray, Our hearts thrill wi' rapture, For simmer's away. ' The clear wimplin' burnie, That lonpt o'er the lynn, And charmed a* our hearts Wi' its daffiu and din, Now^lowly and sadly Creeps round the steep brae, And croons a lament I For the simmer away, I The blythe spankie lassies | That skipp'd o'er the braes, J And sang like wee Unties The laug sunny days, I Now dundor for-foachten i Wi' sorrow and wae, I And mourn a' the beauties O' simmer away. J You hie castled tower j On the ivy -clad steep, That smiled o'er the waves O' the isle spangled deep, | And in gladness rejoiced Amid auld time's decay, Now frowns o'er the wreck O' sweet simmer away. Nae mair the wee lammies Frisk o'er the glad lea, Or the birdies sing love lajs On ilka green tree ; A' nature 'is silent An' dowie an* wae, New tear-draps she sheds For the Biinmer away. Pale autumn has come Wi' her leaves brown and sere , And robb'd o' her beauties The queen o' the year ; While winter approaches Wi' mantle o' grey, To chase wi* his storm-blasts Sweet simmer away. The bard, who inspired Wi' creation's glad strain, And cuUed a' the flowers O' the hill and the plain, Now wanders forlorn Amid nature's decay, And mourns for his idol His simmer away.
