PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN CALDER OF THE SCREW STEAM SHIP "OMEO."
- Lastrweek.'onthe'al'rival bf~tHe Omeo off the Bluff, an address signed by the whole of the saloon passengers, was presented to Captain Calder, expressing the sense they entertained of his courtesy and gentlemanly bearing, and the high opinion they had formed of his capabilities as a commander, worthy to be entrusted with the very arduous and important duties which devolve on such command. For several years Captain Calder acted as chief officer on board the Omeo, and the occasion to which we refer was his .first voyage as captain of the . ship. The act of. the presentation was graceful on the part of the passengers, and must have been gratifying to the worthy captain. Thus we have it that in the school of labor (Captain Calder being a self-made man) is taught the best practical wisdom ; and that a life of manual employment is npt incompatible with the highest culture. , .
