* The New York papers are discussing the treaty for the settlement of the Alabama claims, as signed in London, on Janu&iy 14th, by Lord Clarendon and Mr jEJeverdy Johnson. "Tl^i^ideht Grant, in response to the
formal notification of his election to the presidency, declared that he would faithfully fulfil the duoies of the office, and call around him men who would earnestly carry out principles of economy and honesty ; adding, however, that he declined to anno-ince 7 the names of the members of the Cabinet until the nominations should be sent to the Senate. The nrw Tarin Bill has been passed, notwithstanding the President's veto.
