PRESBYTERY OF SOUTHLAND.
The quarterly meeting of the Presby- " tery of Southland was held ixi Invercargill on Wednesday, the fth inst. THe Eev. Andrew H. Stobo moderator. There were present Messrs Stobo, Stevens, Alexander, and Clark, ministers ; Messrs G-eisow, Invercargill ; M'Phee^ . Riverton ; Gray, Wallacetown, elders. "'■'. ■ The consideration of the proposal of x-, the National Bible Society, to assist the Presbytery in paying a colporteur, was postponed till next ordinary meeting. A call to the Rev Donald Boss, -from the congregation of the Wakatipu district, was laid on the table, and alsO a letter from Mr Boss intimating his acceptance of the same. The call was sustained, and the Presbytery agreed to meet at Queenstown on the 30th current, to induct Mr Ross to the pastoral charge of the congregation/ The clerk reported thathehadascertained that the Rev Charles Connor, who labors at Popotunoa, preaches monthly in the lower Mataura district. Mr Stobo reported that no arrangements were made through the Church Extension Committee, to supply "Winton and Forest Hill. It was moved by Mr G-iesow, seconded by the clerk, and unanimously agreed to — " That an application be made without delay, to the Church Extension Committee, for a preacher to supply these districts.''. < It is expected £150 a year may be raised in Winton and Forest Hill, and adjoining runs, to support a preacher. 1 There was no report from the Sabbath 1 Observance Committee. It was re*appointed. ' Mr Stobo reported that the Rev A. B. Arnot, a minister in full standing in connection with the Presbyterian Church ' in the North, had come to Southland, 1 and was in the meantime laboring at "' Switzers and Upper Mataura. It was agreed to ask Mr Armot to continue his 1 services in that district for other three 1 months. The Presbytery agreed to express their great satisfaction with the visit of the Rev John Inglis, missionary from the New Hebrides, and their gratification air the progress which is reported in collections for the Insurance fund of the Day Spring, in the various congregations, and recommend that the collections be finished as soon as possible. An extract minute of Synod was read, urging that steps be taken to create more interest in behalf of the Sustentation Fund. It was agreed that the subject shall be brought before the congregations by means of the various ministers exchanging pulpits. It was agreed to recommend the various ministers to have special services in connection with the in- gathering of the harvest. : The Presbytery agreed to sanction, the applications from the Deacon's Courts of Wallacetown and Riverton, for an addi. tional grant of £50 from the Church Trust Funds. ) .i = Mr Alexander laid on ihe table a plan for an addition to the manse of Long ; Bush. The same was approved. < The Presbytery adjourned to meet at Invercargill oq Wednesday, the 30th of June next, at 11 o'clock forenoon.
