THE VOLUNTEER RIFLE MATCHES AT DUNEDIN.

We subjoin a full list of the scores made by the competitors at the recent Rifle matches for the G-overnment prizes at Dunedin. There was a very large number of competitor*, each province in the Middle Island sending several, as did also the County of Westlaud, Southland being the only locality represented by only a single volunteer. Otago, it will be seen, has maintained her prestige of possessing some of the best shots in the colony. She takes all four ) prizes in the first match, and Ist and 2nd in the second, ihe 3rd, being gained for Southland by private Clode, of the Riverton Company. In the class for cadets, Ist and" 3rd prizes went to Marlborough, the 2nd going to the neighbouring province of Nelson. The weather during the first day was very fine, but ou the second leas favorable. The average scores show a very general competency, highly creditable to the Colonial Volunteers. ,

Ist Set Pbizes. At ranges of 400, 500, and 600 yards. Five shots at each range. No artificial rest. Any position. One sighting shot at each range. Ist prize, £50 ; 2nd do, £25 ; 3rd do, £15 j 4th do, £10. No prize given for a less score than 30 marks. Highest possible score, 60 marks. Tho scores at the champion match (first day) were as follows : — Sqtud No. 1.

2nd Set Ppizes. At ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards. Five shots at each range. No sighting shot. Hythe position at 200 yards ; any position at 500 and 600 yards. Ist prize, £20; 2nd do, £15 ; 3rd do, £10 ; 4th do, £5. No prize given for a less score than 30 marks. Highest possible score, 60 marks.

3bd Set op Phizes.

At ranges of 700 and 800 yardß. Ten shots at each range. Any position. One sighting shot at each range. Ist prize, £15 ; 2nd do, £10 ; 3rd do, £5. No prize given for a less »core that 30 marks. Highest possible score, 80 marks. 700 800 Tl. M'Farlaud, Otago 10 19—29 Grant, Ofcago 14 12—26 Fisher, Westland 12 12—24 Treseder, Otago 11 12—23 Robinson, Otago ... 15 8—23 No prize was awarded.

} 4th Set — Cadet Phizes. Five shots at a range of 150 yards, with breech or muzzle loading carbines. Standing or kneeling only, without artificial rest! Highest possible score, 20 marks. No prize given for a lesa score than 12 marks. Competed for by members of Cadet Corps not exceeding seventeen years of age. Ist prize, £10 ; 2nd do, £7 ; third do, £3.
