"Wellin&tgn, 12 noon, March 81. Telegrams from Napier state that large public meetings had been held at Napier, Meanee, and Waipukurau. A memorial to the Governor, has been adopted, expressing the regret and alarm of the inhabitants of the province of j Hawke's Bay, at the withdrawal of j authority from Mr M'Lean, as Government agent. J The memorial states that the efforts of i the present Ministry have failed to secure peace, and that a feeling of general insecurity prevails. It advises His Excellency to procure advisers, possessing the confidence of the people, and attributes the spread of the rebellion to the unwiae and inefficient administration of affairs. Ife further asserts that no hopes of ameliorating the present deplorable condition of the country can be entertained under the present Ministry, and urgea His Excellency to call the General Assembly together at once. A large number of the influential chiefs have waited on Mr j M'Lean, for the purpose of expressing their regret and sorrow at the treatment received by him from the General Government. , The several meetings were largely attended by both Europeans and natives, and the tone of opinion and remark was almost unanimous.
