FEOM WANGANUI.
Wellington, March 17. The Wanganui coach brings in most important and cheering intelligence. Colonel Whitmore fell in with the enemy at Otaia on Saturday morning last, having Burprirsed them under cover of the mist. He succeeded about dawn in driving them under the fire of Colonel St. John's masked reserve. The fight lasted four hours, and took place in a wooded gully. All the enemy's tents were burnt. A number of women and children were captured. The enemy's loss was heavy, seven were seen dead, and many more were carried off in the retreat. Our loss is twelve wounded, one fatally — Gundry. Kemp and the Kupapas are in pursuit. Tito Kowaru made a narrow escape by •wimming a river. Tito Ko tram's defeat is considered most important. Many of his allies are leaving him, and his supplies and ammunition are running short.
