Dr Jenneb.— We observe that the members of the Church of England purpose welcoming the Bishop of Dunedin, Dr Jenner, by inviting him to a tea meeting. No doubt the attendance will be numerous. Fxowee Show. — We need scarcely remind our readera that the exhibition will be open to-day. We learn that Mr Hall has given his Australian Desert Pea, which attracted so mu.-h attention yesterday to be sold for the benefit of the Society. It will be put up to auction this evening at 9 o'clock. Occident. — A very sad accident, resulting in the death of a young child, occurred in Spey- street yesterday, 9t,h inst. The infant in question, a little girl only 20 months old daughter of Mr Wra. Shields, carter, had been out of sis<ht for only a very few minutes, when it was found in a shallow gutter which runs through the garden attached to Mr Shield's house, quite dead. There was little or no water in the drain, but the poor thin" had tnmble I in so as to become wedged in the bo i torn with its face downwards, and buried in the mud. Pboyincia.l, Council.— The business of the Provincial Council last evening was opened by M» Basstian moving for leave to iutroduce a petition by Messrs Campbell and Robertlion, tor compensation on account of the old Town Board claim. The petition was read and law l upon the t:.ble. Mr Pratt then moved according to notice, the return of the tenders (unopened) f.r leasing the traffic on the Bluff Harbor and Invercargill Railway, supporting his motion on the ground of an error in the form of a ivertisemeut. The motion was carried. Mr Basstian's motion to recommend a grant of £20u0 to the Acclimatisation Society, was acceeded to by the Council, as was Dr Ho.lgkinson s motion on emigration. The discussion on Mr Johnstons motion for re-annexation to Otago was protracted until past 12 o'clock, when it was wnhdrawn. Several other motions of ■ condary importance were introduced am a 'reed to , the orders ot the ay were postponed untifneit e.tung, and the Cou iud adjourned at 12.45 till ha f past seven this evening. Te Kooti.— lt is placed beyond reasonable doubt, by the last despatches from Auuklanc, that Kooti and the wreck of his foJ..wers tire on the Waioeka river, about thirty muVs up the valley. Tne number said to be with him-forty men-tallies as nearly a3 can be expectfd with that of the Chatham Island prisoners believed by the Government, on the I word of several good authorities, to be at large namtly, fifty-three. Kooti's wound at Wan* was but a slight one. Since his arrival at Waioeka he had been joined by ten Urewem from Maung.poh.ita, an I fifteen to twenty of various trib-s from Waikato. At the time the last liters ieit Opotiki. K oti had not announced the dccisiun oi the Atua as to his movements vrheth.r he was to attack Oputiki, Turanga or laup.j ; but little doubt seemed to exist m the minds oi hie hearers that i,e would move on Opotiki. T.ie IViandly Xativoa of the nei hooeh,od were not. . isposed, so far, to accedt his overtures. JMI Kv^ hud offered help, and the renowned Ro...ata W.thawaha. hero of N-ataija VH-'notfaroff on a tangi. The Hon.
