COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Times Office, Saturday Evening. The following are the Customs returns for —

By the urrival of the Lord Ashley we are in possession of our northern files to the 26th ult. The ' Otago Daily Times' of that date has the following : — In the import-, market, some moderate transactions have Uen reported, but there is still an amount of enquiry going forward which should lead to operations o(' greater magnitude. In flour, we note stocks as working rlown, and scurcely any other than Provincial is now oblai iable. In (train, the parcels moving have not heen large! This season's wlie. t and oats ari* off ring, bdt there are in the nvantruc n> puic!ia«ers Old oats are in the meantime realizing 2s 91. Notwithstanding the sale of sugars adverti-ed for to-mo. row, there has been some activity in Drivate sales, and prices realised have been very full ; in the meantime, ie'i.ii>k; advices point to the probability of even higher rates than those ruling nt present. In liquids, Mil-re hive been sales of Blood's stout, at 9.- ; Martell's bran ly, in case, 27s 6.1 ; | H- nnessy's ditto, 28s ; and a parcel of case whiskies at pi i -e not n nue I — this nriieie is now becoming seasee, and the favoiite brands are in ■very slender supph. In miscellan. ous goo is theiv have been qu tt.-d — fill-weiglit <;au.lles at ll^d ; halt-pint u.-.sicr oil, 6s L- £ 1 io 7s ; Keill-r's cuni'cet unnrj, lid ; brown papers, 3j I to 4d , and printing papers, 6£ Ito li-JJ. by auction, the only sal ■oi any nuimrnt took place at the Universal liond, .-ii»-ut b'J hhd» nil brew aies, b« in^ placed by Messrs Dj Carle and Co., at low raies. t'lie * LyUeitou Tunes' of th>3 21th inst repo ts — Air LJ. "W. Turner held a sal > of pastoral properi^ at AL-s-sis Miles and Co.'s rooms, Herelord str-et. this day. 'There was a large attendance, b..t Ihe bidding whs not very brisk. The ii'Bt lot. sub ...itt'il was run No. 116 on the south bank oi ihd Kak.iia, containing 20,0UJ acres ot land— l2s' of which t»ie ireehoid — and lO.UOO sheep uf mixed h^cs Mr Cat heart WiUon, a g.M^^miii recently arrived fron Eng and, opened ill- t'i idiiijj at t9 >0. it was knoykis.t do>ui to him !-." t'L ,()uo Tu.: run wa' so aby or.ier of ihtiiiort^u 9 co. iukj acvoud lot c-uuiurided Z6,5Qj

acres, known as the Gray's Hill run, near Tiniaru. with 12,000 mixpd sheep, ard extensive improx.tnentß. The bidding co' roenced at £5000 and terminated at. £7000, Mr G. Gould being nominally the purchaser. The third lot consisted nf 23.000 acres in the same district, with 6500 sheep, but. i-o reasonable offer being made, it was withdrawn. Both the last name 1 lots were offered at the instance of Messrs S. S. and J. Field. The 'Wellington Independent'^' of^thc 20th instant reports : — We are sorry that it is not in our power to note any improvement in trade since our l as >' report, on the contrary everything? bears as gloomy an aspect as can well be, and the constantly recurring complaint o< bad times threaten 9 t-> become chronic. Under the=e eirrum-tnnces "1S almost impossible to give reliable quotations! a> prices depend mainly upon the needs of tho se '" lers. At Messrs Krull and Co.'s stores, ten casej of sheet zinc, slightly sea-damaged, fetched f- I' 3 j and £29 per to-i by auction ; and at Messrs V' 1 ' 1 " I neU. Mills, and Co.'s auction sale, on the 19t a I current, the following prices were realised, th c attendance being limited nnd most of the lot-- ! withdrawn : — En-.'lish bacon, 4-Jd per lb ; elemc i raisins, 4fd per lb ; sultan-.i do, 4&d ; currants, lsd ; Melbourne household soap, £'26 per ton ; ■lairy salt, 82s 6d, and coarse, 67s 6 1 per ton : flour, £14 10s per ton ; tea, in boxes, duty paid. 28s. in halves, 2s per lb ; Port. Cooper cheese, 5d per lb ; Cheddar do. 8d ; Victoria Stores bottle, i ale, 4s per doz ; Blood's stout, 9s to 10s 6 ) per doz ; halves sardines, Ss 3d to 8s 9d per doz ; case g.n, 3 616 contents, 11s per case, in bond ; English j mis, in tins, 8s 9d per dcz ; bottled fruits, 12s 6d per doz ; oatmeal, 12s 9d per lOOlbs ; champagne, 30s per doz, duty paid. ' The price, of keg butter has reduced considerably since the arrival of the Omeo at the Bluf", as the high rat^s ii Melbourne do not appear to have been sustained — lOd per lb is the present quotation, but buyers are not ea;er. It is not improbable that those who have held back for high prices will see cause to regret, the course they have adopted. Grain for horse- feed is slightly improved ; oats are worth 3s to 3s 3d per bushel ; and maize, 5a per bushel. The ' Daily Southern Cross ' (Auckland) of th.i 16th inst., reports : — Mr Stannu3 Jones sold at his mart yesterday a consignment of goods, to hand per schooner Margaret, from Dunedin. There was a very good attendance, and the prices realised may be considered satisfactory. The following is a list of the prices obtained : — English and colonial bacons, lOd ; currants, 3yd ; maizena, 6,1 ; kerosune, 2s 5d ; fresh herrings, 6s ; fine salt, £3 12s 6d to £3 15s ; Auckland soap, 26< ; vt-stas, 21s 9d ; American brooms, 10s ; pickled salmon, 3jd ; Hules' candles, 12? d; Allsoppfe ale, 6s to 6s 3d ; Tennent's &t<mt. quarts, 10a 3d ; pints, 6s 3d; Stouuhton's bitters, 21s; orange bitters, 33s ; raspberry vinegar, 18s ; assorted Syrups, 13s.
