By the arrival of the Egmout, we are placed in possession of late Northern papers. The ' New Zealand Sun,' of the 3rd inst., contains the following : — There has been very little doing in the import markets or Colonial produce during the day, buyers manifesting a desire to know the state of the Melbourne markets, -which by the arrival of the Gothenburg at the Bluff this morning became partially known by telegram in the afternoon— too late, however, to give any J impetus to business. We have to note sales of brandies, in case, at 28s ; and Blood's stout in a line at 8s 6d, in bond. Bulk brandies may now be said to be worth 8s 3d— holders asking that figure. Under the heading of chemicals -we also notice that a small parcel of soda crystals changed hands at from 11s lOd to 12s, and caustic soda at from £24 to £24 10s per ton. In dried fruits nothing of any importance has been going forward, a few barrels of currants, at 3£d, being the only sale reported. Groceries and provisions, &c, have been almost neglected. A small parcel of Morton's assorted sauces are reported as having found a buyer, and a new brand in this market called "The Duke of; Edinburgh" sauce, but at what rates are not stated. A fair enquiry has been apparent for crushed lump sugar, the price of which is firm at from £45 to £46 ; sales are not reported as ! effected, but there is a probability of some parcels shortly changing hands. Some considerable transactions are reported in butter for shipment to Melbourne, where the price still keeps high. Flour is still unchanged, Oats will no doubt further advance with present advices from Victoria. LONDON WOOL SALES. The following i« M« aa ro D»lg»ty, Ducm, and Uo.'s report, dated December 3 : — The fourth series of public sales for colonial wools commenced on 26th November, having been deferred by the elections. The quantity announced of new wool is as follows: — New South Wales and Queensland, 17,415 ; Victoria, 8542 ; South Australian, 1222 ; Tasmanian, 1802 ; New Zealand, 9110 ; Cape of Good Hope, 48,951 ; total, 87,042 bales ; and it was understood that 35,000 bales were held over, which will appear in the catalogues. A large attendance of buyers from our own manufacturing districts and from the continent has given an improved tone to the demand, but without any quotable general advance. Wools held over have in general justified their withdrawal in the last series by their resale ; but as these were for the most part withdrawn in consequence of irregular competition, they do not afford the criterion they would otherwise do. New South Wales remains at about closing rates of last series. Victorian, of which the supply is very limited, may be quoted £d to Id higher, except indifferent greasy wool, which has sold as before. Hfew Zealand of combing descriptions fully maintains the improvement observable at close of last seiies. Inferior sorts have not shared in this improvement. The most satisfactory feature in the market is that there is a good inquiry for actual consumption, both here and on the Continent, leading us to hope that, as regards Australian wool, we shall begin the year with a light stock and a healthy state of trade.
