The following priucipal items of intelligence are extracted from the Canterbury and Dunediii papers : — Wellington, Dec. 27. The probable opening of the Upper Thames district to gold miners, and the recovery of £1300 damages, by Miss Knox, from Hunt, of Hunt's claim, for breach of promise of marriage, are the principal topics of interest in the Auckland papers. There is no news from "Wanganui. The cargo of the Kaikoura is still on board the hulk. Neither the company nor the Government will take the responsibility of injury to delicate fabrics by fumigation. "Who is bound to fumigate is the question upon which the law advisers of both parties totally differ. Wellington, Jan. 2. The ' Wanganui Herald ' of the 26th ult. says, " the Wanganui and Kai Iwi Volunteer Cavalry attacked the enemy's stronghold at Nukumaru this morning; the Cavalry were reconnoitring the position when they were fired upon. The fire was returned, and some of them galloped straight to the palisading and poured in a volley. Sergeant Maxwell was shot through the breast, and lwed but a few seconds. Five Hauhaus climbed the palisading from the inside, and, attempting to regain the rifle-pit outdide, were all shot. An accurate knowledge of the enemy's position has been obtained. The loss of the enemy was considerable, as he exposed himself iv retreating from the pa. Sergeant Maxwell was buried at Wan- , ganui on the 28th. Colonel Lyon, with the Maori troop, ' reached, and returned from, Patea safely. The G-overnraent advertise for 2,500 ' poles for a telegraph to Wanganui. Tenders will be received up to 14th.
