INVERCARGILL GRAMMAR SCHOOL ANNUAL EXAMINATION.

The Annual Examination of Mr M'Donald's pupils has for a number of years formed one of the events of the season; the. public display of juvenile talent in the way of readings, recitations, declamations, &c, &c, arid the presentation of the prizes, which takes place on the evening of the examination day, usually forming an entertainment, attractive alike to old and youiig. On the present occasion, the proceedings were invested with even more than usual interest from the fact that the. more exciting part of the -programme was to be performed in the Theatre.Royal, the school being> far too small to accommodate the T^Vge number ot parents and friends anxious to be present to witness anticipated triumphs of their|favorites.. Tuesday^ the 22 nd inst, was the day appointed for the examination, and by 10 o'clock, the lw>ur ] ac which duties were to commence, there , was a considerable muster of those particularly interested in the pupils at the Grammar School, and others interested in the cause of education generally. The extensive addition uiade to the academy, \ and the excellent internal arrangement effected to Secure the comfort of the scholars, were noticed and appreciated by all present. The building is divided into four spacious class-rooms, in which the masters carried on the examination simultaneously. The proficiency displayed by- thd boys generally was highly creditable to Mr\ M\Doriald arid His assistant'^ who" must h&ve been much gratified by the frequent expressions of pleasure and satisfaction ou the part of parents present. At the Theatre Royal in the evening there wa.s quite a crowd, the greater portion being ladies, to. hear the speeches an^aee the distribution of prices. The Boyij t Q e j?r'incipai, and the Rev H. Stobo, occupied the stage, the large collection of handsome volumns to be distributed as rewards of merit, occupying a prominent position in the foreground. We cannot particularise the different parts of the entertainmeritj Suffice it to say that the programme comprised readings and recitations in prose and poetry from the best authors, a scene from " The Knights of the Round Table," one from Sheridan Knowles, and Dickens' Bob Sawyer's party, and that the youngsters bore the trying ordeal of being the observed of all observers, with great pluck — one or two extremely bashful little fellows excepted. After the speeches, the Rev. Mr Stobo addressed the assembly in a few .appropriate remarks, especially congratulating Mr McDonald on the Results of bis untiring devotion to his profession. He then presented the prizes to the successful competitors — some of the miniature " Admirable Chrichtoris " getting quite a heap — accompanying the rewards with a lew suitable words of commendation and encouragement.. The meeting was also addressed by Messrs Harvey and Kingsland, both of whom congratulated Mr McDonald and the other masters on their success in imparting instruction. A verse of the Queen's Anthem closed the proceedings of an evening which was a most enjoyable one to the audience^ and which will mark an er"a in the history of many of the youths who took a principal part in the performance.
