OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TENDERS.
The following tenders for the completion of the Oreti Railway were opened on Saturday afternoon, 14th nit., at the Government Offices, in the presence of the Executive, Mr Patterson (Railway Engineer), and a number of the tenderers: —
There appears to be a favorable opening for a medical gentlemen just now in the Five Rivers District. By an advertisement appearing elsewhere applications are invited for the appointment, the residents guaranteeing a bonus of £250, whib the probable additional income from fees are estimated at £300 more. £550 per annum seems an income sufficient to induce considerable competition for the situation and ought to secure a thoroughly competent and eligible practitioner. From a telegram received from Donedin on Saturday night, ire learn that news by the s.s. Bob Soy, from Melbourne, states the result of the race for the Melbourne Cup to be — GHencore Ist, Strop 2nd, and Shenandoah 3rd. A new district, said to be adapted both for agricultural and pastoral pursuits, has been opened up on the Bees River at the head of Lake Wakatip. According to the local journal two large mobs of cattle have already been taken in this direction— one by Mr James Bridge, and the other by Mr Butement. The Saturday half-day holiday system, that has long been adopted at home and in Victoria, is gradually becoming appreciated in thi colony. The banks and most of the commercial houses in Dunedin have for some time closed business at one o'clock, and we learn that the different trades are following suit. The ' Daily Mail,' of tne 13th inst., says : — " At a meeting of operative painters yesterday evening, it was reported that all their employers in town had agreed to their proposition for a Saturday half holiday ; they will, therefore, in future cease work at one o'clock on that day."
